1st Island Lake Invitational Chess Tournament

By Butch Rabasto

The community of Wasagamack, MB hosted the 1st Inter-Island Lake Chess Tournament last February 12, 2018 (Monday). This is the 1st invitational chess tournament participated by the schools in the island lake communities of Wasagamack, St. Theresa Point and Garden Hill. Each school formed a chess delegation classified into Team A and Team B and met at the science room of George Knott School for a friendly chess tournament.

It was an exciting event for everyone especially to the chess players being their first time to be exposed in this kind of tournament. The tournament started at 10:30 in the morning and lasted until 2:30 in the afternoon. Winners were determined by the total points accumulated by both their teams A & B in a three (3) game round-robin match.

The first two (2) games were played from 10:30 AM to 12 noon after which the players enjoyed a pizza lunch. In between, we have a friendly match between Butch (George Knott School) and Frank (Garden Hill First Nation High School) which gave the players some entertainment, lessons and tips on the rudiments of the game of chess.

The last round was played after lunch was over and the points were accumulated and tallied to determine the winning teams. Based on the final tally of the scores, the participating school teams were awarded the following trophies:

Champion - George Knott School with a total of 11.5 points

1st Runner up - St. Theresa Point High School accumulating a total of 9.5 points

2nd Runner up - Garden Hill First Nation High School finishing with a total of 9.0 points
