We want to wish you a Merry Christmas to everybody from Kindergarten students.
Have a safe holiday and keep your kids warm when they go outside.
Jocelyn Harper - Teacher
We have been very busy these past few weeks, working on our packsack unit, letter sounds, and addition. We had an awesome Halloween then have been busy practicing our Christmas song for the concert. Students are super excited with the upcoming holidays and have been eager to participate in every event. Please dress your child warm when sending them to school. Students often arrive at school with very little winter gear or jackets unzipped. Hope everyone has an awesome and safe holiday.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Maralee Wood
Hello! My name is Maralee Wood and I am the Grade 2A teacher for this year. I will start off with a little introduction myself. I started working in the school as an EA for high school in 2011. I started at Brandon University in the spring of 2014 in the PENT program. I will be graduating from PENT in (hopefully) July 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts and Education degree. I took the opportunity to teach Grade 2 because I needed the experience especially the younger ones. It has been a huge learning experience and I am enjoying every moment of it.
The Grade 2A students have been amazing to work with and they are always ready to learn something new. They are filled with a lot of questions and always try and work hard in whatever they are doing. They have been concentrating a lot on phonics and sight words and in math we are doing number recognition, addition, and subtraction facts. In science and social studies we have been working slowly in our interactive notebooks.
The new year will bring will a lot of new changes and beginnings. We will be starting our traditional units as well as learning to speak in our traditional language. My plan is to develop learning language games that can be played on the smartboard as well as the smart table.
The Grade 2A class would like to say Merry Christmas to everyone and to have a good and safe new year!

Welcome Grade 4A students for a great start of school year 2017- 2018!
Thank you parents for your unceasing support.
Students were primarily oriented with the school and classroom rules to be followed on the very first day of school.
Every student was encouraged to Be Excellent, Happy, Attentive and Very Enthusiastic as we embark to another school year.
After a week of getting started, the Grade 4A class posed for a while to appreciate and be grateful for the good things in their lives as they spent a moment to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.
Grade 4A students had fun identifying the different continents of the world and expressed their desire which country they would like to be in the future.
The most awaited event of the year that revolved around the children to wear their scary outfits and count infinite candies gathered from the neighbors around the community ignited the second month of the school year. The Grade 4A students displayed their Halloween costumes and spent the rest of the afternoon playing games, eating together and bringing home their bag of goodies.
May this holiday season bring you the warmth of friendship and home, the love of family and the company of good friends. Have a blessed Christmas and a faith-filled New year everyone!
Sheryl Harper - Teacher
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I would like to take this time and say Thank You for sending your child to school. It has been a busy few months as we are studying our writing techniques, Math, nature, grammar, our country, our health, and etc. It is very important to have your child dress warm for the season.
The grade 5A class and I want to say Merry Christmas and have a safe holiday.

This month is shaping up to be a tremendous one. The students are beginning to apply the skills they already possess and apply new ones they have learned so that they may Earn Their Learning which is one of the core goals of the class this year. Currently we are on our Bacteria topic on Science and finding out what causes it and finding out to be always healthy. In Language Arts, our focus is on learning how to write proper paragraphs using the definition and elements of paragraph and following the Six Traits of Writing as our guides. We have just begun our investigation into the history of Canada and the students were intrigued to find out that Canada looked quite a bit different in the past, in terms of the provinces and territories. In Math, the students are developing their problem solving and flexible thinking skills for patterns by solving many authentic mathematical scenarios and situations.
I look forward to seeing and meeting everyone at the upcoming Christmas concert. Merry Christmas!

Hello Wasagamack.
First of all I want to wish everyone a merry and safe Christmas. I hope everyone gets what they want. School is going very fast and students are working hard on getting their credits. Many programs going on in the school such as the drama club. So far it is much fun and the students are enjoying it.
Another program going on is the chess club. We meet every week to play. We are about to have our first ever Island Lake Chess Tournament. Butch, Brian, and I are putting this together. Should be much fun.
In the science room some students were able to dissect the heart of a pig. They enjoyed it. The science fair is coming up fast and will be held on Jan 19, 2018. The winners will go and compete in Garden Hill and hopefully in Winnipeg.
Well, bye for now and until next time, Be Good.
Randy Harper - High School Social Studies Teacher
Merry Christmas to Everyone!
This is the season to be jolly and I can see the students are excited. At the moment, the grade 9s has been progressing fast. We are studying about Contemporary Canada. The Grade 11 are studying the history of Canada and the grade12 the Canadian justice system. All is well. This has been a fast year and I will like wish everyone a great and safe holiday season. I hope you have been good and Santa brings you a special gift.
Until the next time, stay cool and be safe.
Sylvia Harper - Teacher
Hello-ho-ho from the ELA portable!
My, my, what a fast and busy year we have had! I am so proud of all the students who continue coming to class everyday and who continue to make an effort in all their classes! Some students lose motivation and whenever I see them, I tell them it is never too late to start coming and that I will help them catch up. The only catch is they have to come! It is kind of hard to help someone catch up when they are not here, eh? So please, push them out the door and send them on their way. They will thank you when they have that coveted cap and gown on.
Grade nines have done some Getting-to-Know-Ourselves activities that will help them learn about the best way they can learn which is something that will help them in their future careers as students. Right now they are learning about the basic essay and will start writing one soon. They are not very excited about it, but I know that they will be so very thankful in the future.
The Grade Elevens have been working like busy bees on their e-zines. Right now, they are working on their Best/Worst reviews. They have completed their covers and introductions. I cannot wait to see the finished products!
This year, we are trying Reading is Thinking as an elective for Grade 12. This class is helping our students become better readers by thinking about the texts they are reading and by connecting what they read to themselves and to people in their lives, to other books they have read, and to the world around them. This thinking about reading will help them become more confident and engaged readers and will really help them when they start post-secondary studies.
That is all for now! Remember to continue sending your children to school. Everyone have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a super fun and safe holiday!
Ella Knott - Home Ec Teacher
Hello to everyone!
Well, it is that time again. It is Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
I hope all of you have a wonderful time with your families this festive season and we will ask our Lord and Saviour, our God to be with us and guide us safely as we enter into the New Year. Thank you all for sending your children to school and may continue in the future.
In Home-Ec., I am sorry to say that we have not done any cooking yet, but we will be cooking in the New Year. Students (High School) have been doing sewing and embroidery this term and we will be finishing up soon.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas and a big Happy New Year!
Donna Wood - Phys Ed Teacher
We had an interesting start to our school year. We participated in Zone 11 this year. Juniors and Seniors team went to The Pas for a sports meet. They did really well for 1st time playing somewhere else. They were well behaved and made some new friends. We are out of our comfort zone, comfort zone meaning interschool meets between St. Theresa Point, Garden Hill and Red Sucker. We will be participating in that interschool meets once winter road is accessible to our closest members. Thanks to all coaches who are helping with the sports events and extra practices. We go again in March to play basketball this time. The students in Phys Ed class are all participating and they are doing well. We have done aerobic exercises, we worked on cardio, kickboxing and started Yoga.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my family to yours.
Dustin Knott - Phys Ed. Teacher
Hello from the Phys Ed department!
We are off to a fast start. Students finally getting back to the routine after a late start to the school year! Please dress your children warm, because we never know when we might go have fun outdoors!
Thank you, from the Phys Ed teachers.

Grade 11B Homeroom Teacher
I would like to inform everyone that the conversion and upgrading of our internet service has been successfully done. There are still things that need to be done such as restoring connectivity of some classrooms to our network, unblocking some software applications commonly used in the classrooms, projector bulbs replacements in some smartboards and installation of the new S6000 smartboards previously delivered for GKS. Close coordination are being done with Schoolnet to restore connectivity and access to software applications and hardware installation.
Our computer lab is one of the classrooms where one (1) of the S6000 smartboards was installed (see above picture). We still have two (2) others for installation in designated classrooms and another four (4) units coming for our school. We will be introducing new technologies sooner or later during our school term as soon as we have the devices in our school.
Our computer class and Grade 11-B class joined the school-wide celebration of Halloween. This event is being observed every year giving the students of George Knott School an opportunity to experience the spirit of Halloween starting with Haunted House, spooky classroom decorations, hand crafted pumpkins as well as trick-or-treat house to house visits of kids in their neighborhood and in the community to get those candies, chocolates, trinkets and goodies that embodies the festivity of the event.
Christmas is just around the corner. We can see and feel in the air the thrill and excitement from everyone as we look forward to join this worldwide celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. He is the reason for the season. I take this opportunity to greet one and all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
Student Chief and Council
It is our last week of school for 2017, and we encourage students to keep working hard for 2018. When school starts up again the student chief and council will try to do more activities for the students!
We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Hello, once again.
I am the vice principal of George Knott School, I have been in the administration field for a long time. I want to thank all the parents that send their children to school. There are times that students do not want to get up and they get tired when they come. It is hard for them to learn if they are tired. We serve them breakfast so they can learn better, they always look forward to having something in their tummy. So, keep sending them to school.
We had a late start in the year due to the forest fires that we had encountered that was a different ordeal. We had to get back to the routine that we doing before, it took awhile. The students need to come to school everyday to learn. I keep reminding them that they are not here to tease or fight but to learn. The teachers are reminded to talk to their student about fighting... there are consequences that will be there. So, we are doing the best we can to keep the students safe and get educated.
Christmas is just around the corner we had feasts for the students. We celebrate with the elders for their wisdom and knowledge that that they share with us. I want to wish a joyous season to all the parents and student and have a happy new year.
Be safe out there...

April Harper - High School Resource
Greetings from High School Resource Department!
It is December already and holidays is approaching fast. We started school in October and Christmas is fast approaching. These past two months have gone by in a blink of an eye. Please continue to send your child to school and support your child by reminding them the importance of education.
I would like to wish everyone a fun and safe holiday. Remember what Christmas is all about. It is to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Marilyn D. Harper - Special Ed/Resource
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Seasons Greetings, Ho Ho Ho!!!!
I am still here working in my little corner of the school while the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations is going on all around me. It is hard for me to shut out all the excitement but I still have to work on the stuff coming in through this technology called Email. Within the past 2 weeks we have had 6 visitors coming in to help us in our Special Ed/Resource program. They are the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Specialist, the American Sign Language Instructor (ASL), the Special Ed. Consultant, the Speech/Language Pathologist, the Occupational Therapist and the Student Support Facilitator. So, with all this coming at me, it is very hard to keep up with al the referrals and at the same time trying to update our student lists, files and timetables and of course, the everyday things like student transportation and such. But, you know what? I love my job and the more we have to do, the merrier, right?
One reminder... if you see me come prowling around your home, please do not be alarmed. I will be coming to have new consent forms signed for our clinicians. They have new ones and we will need to have those in the student files ASAP. Believe me, it is not easy for me to go to your homes, not because I do not want to see you but because I am scared of some of your dogs. So wish me luck!
I want to encourage all parents to keep sending their children to school. Within my years of working here in the classroom and in the resource room, I have encountered many students who do not like school. Some kick and scream as they enter school with their parents. As soon as the parents leave, we begin to calm them down and they will be happy, working, and playing for the rest of the day. I also want to thank the parents who are sending their children to school and encouraging them to be good in school and to listen to their teachers and the staff.
Please continue to teach your children to have respect for themselves, others and all things. Also remind them that they go to school to learn and work towards their goals and that they are not here to fool around when its work time. The teachers know that children like to have fun and they have little activities set aside for that.
Young parents, please keep your homes warm and happy for your children and do not show them anything that you do not want them to be when they grow up. I hope everyone, young and old, will have a very wonderful Christmas. Let us all look out for each other so everyone will be safe throughout the holidays. May God bless you all!!!
Cindy Knott - Teacher

Greetings from Grade 2C!
We are learning to get along in our classroom and being respectful to ourselves and everyone in school. In Math, we have learned to do addition, subtraction, patterns and knowing our number. We are presently learning to read. Even though there are times we have a hard time doing our work, we always try our very best and that is what counts. Other than that, we are doing very well.
We would like to take this time to wish all of Wasagamack a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I hope to see you, parents, in the New Year in my class room, to support your child with our Traditional Units we are doing. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We have been working extra hard within the past 2 months . We have tried and covered many concepts as we can. Students are eager to learn new things and enjoys coming to school. The students are getting into their daily routine and is working together as a team.

Jennifer C. Knott - Teacher
First of all, I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. I hope you will have a very good year in 2018.
The students in Grade 5/6 are doing well in class, we have gone over hurtles and will overcome more in the coming year.
When school began, we had to get use to going to school as we have started late in the year. They had many stories to tell, of when they had their summer holidays and what they did during the evacuation. They said they enjoyed being out in the city, most important one was that they were with their families and extended families with them.
We got to being in a routine and to work together as this was a split class. Each grade have their own work and it is a challenge but we are doing good.
My students would like to say hi to everyone and Merry Christmas.
Cecilia Harper - Teacher
A big hello from Grade 7B
The first day the school started, the students have taken time learning the rule of Respect. I thought to myself as a teacher, we must learn to have the communication. That way, when we let out, we will learn to work together in achieving and overcoming of what stands in our way. Although we have our daily struggles day to day, still...we must keep on. The students have learned to follow their classroom routines and they have no problems with that. We are doing okay!
We plan to look forward to learn new things. Do not be afraid to drop into our little portable classroom at anytime.
We would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Lorna Wood - Teacher
Seasons Greetings!
We have been working so hard in the past 2 months trying to catch up time lost. We have learned some of the writing tools already but math is hard. We also learned the ancient civilizations as far as the Egyptians in social studies. It took a lot of reading and work but we enjoyed it. History is interesting. In science, we did group presentations on body systems. We gathered our courage to present to an audience but this experience made us confident. We are doing well in our studies.
We had a middle years feast recently and it was a lot of fun. The food was delicious! We would like to thank the administration staff and teachers and to all that helped put up the event.
May Santa bring you your wish! Christmas is so close now and we are looking forward to celebrating this wonderful season with our families and friends. It is so exciting. Remember, it is not all about getting presents but giving a gift of love, joy and peace. May God keep your blessings throughout the holidays.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
What is Christmas? Christmas is a holiday. Christmas is the birth of Jesus. Most people celebrate Christmas by giving gifts to everyone they care about. Christmas is also a time to sit on the lap of Santa and ask what you would like for Christmas.
What do you and family do during the Christmas holiday? On December 24, on the eve of Christmas, everybody cooks and prepare food during the day so it will be ready in the evening. In the evening people would wrap last minute gifts and get ready for the most special night. My family would gather at the house of my kookim with all the food and presents.
I like Christmas. It is so special because of all the grandchildren come together to one house. We play and eat and open presents but most of all to see my parents and kookim and koomshoom very happy!
Lennon Harper
Christmas is about Jesus. It is about families coming together and giving and receiving gifts. It makes us smile and laugh. It is about playing with our cousins, nieces, and nephews, a happy crowd. Christmas brings us joy, happiness...thanks to Jesus who was born. Christmas is the best.
What I do with my family on Christmas is go to church on Christmas Eve and celebrate the birthday of Jesus with everyone in the community. We have a good celebration. We shake everyones hand and wish them a Merry Christmas. After church, my family brings food and presents to the house of my kookim. All my relatives come and set up for a feast. We pray to Jesus for an amazing Christmas and then we eat. After eating, we clean up the living room and all the kids will sit down and wait for Santa. At midnight we open presents.
How I feel about Christmas is happiness and warmth in my heart. There is joy and peace. What a great loving spirit. It is so exciting. I am so happy when my family is happy at the house of my kookim. My heart will always be glad for the birthday of Jesus. It gives me the happiest mood ever!

Mathematics is one subject that pervades life at any age and in any circumstance. Thus, its value goes beyond the classroom and the school. Mathematics as a school subject, therefore, must be learned comprehensively and with much depth.
The twin goals of mathematics in the basic education levels, are Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. Critical thinking, according to Scriven and Paul (1987) is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skilfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.
On the other hand, according to Polya (1945 & 1962), mathematical problem solving is finding a way around a difficulty, around an obstacle, and finding a solution to a problem that is unknown.
These two goals are to be achieved with an organized and rigorous curriculum content, a well-defined set of high-level skills and processes, desirable values and attitudes, and appropriate tools, taking into account the different contexts of Individual learners.
There are five content areas in the curriculum, as adopted from the framework prepared by MATHTED & SEI (2010):
Numbers and Number Sense, Measurement, Geometry, Patterns and Algebra, and Probability and Statistics. The specific skills and processes to be developed
are: knowing and understanding; estimating, computing and solving; visualizing and modelling; representing and communicating; conjecturing, reasoning, proving and decision-making; and applying and connecting.
The following values and attitudes are to be honed as well: accuracy, creativity, objectivity, perseverance, and productivity.
We recognize that the use of appropriate tools is necessary in teaching mathematics. These include: manipulative objects, measuring devices, calculators and computers, smart phones and tablet PCs, and the Internet.
We define context as a locale, situation, or set of conditions of Individual learners that may influence their study and use of mathematics to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Contexts refer to beliefs, environment, language and culture that include traditions and practices, as well as the prior knowledge and experiences of the learners.

I would like to say hello to all of you reading this newsletter.
First of all I would like to thank all parents/guardians that continue to send their children to school. I hope everyone is okay from the fire evacuation that occurred in October 2017. As we all know, Christmas break is just around the corner. Our guitar groups are planning on doing something a little different for this upcoming concert on Wednesday December 13, 2017. For our grade 6, 7 and 8 guitar groups, audience members will be given lyrics to all of the pieces that they will be performing and everyone not playing will be encouraged to sing/hum along while the students are playing. I hope all parents will make an effort to watch how well their child is doing in his/her guitars classes.
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and stay safe throughout the holidays.
William Deaffie - Teacher
This being my first time here, I found it challenging but very exciting at the same time. I have had Grades 7 & 8 and they are progressing very well. We are stressing safety and respect for the projects of other students. Grades 9A & 9B have done well in their projects. I am pleased to see them doing well. Hopefully, we will continue to progress well even though I have only been here a short time. I find it beautiful here and I am enjoying meeting new people. Just a short note for now. In future, I hope to have more to report.
Merry Christmas to all staff and students!
