Hello to the Community Members!

The second term for High School has started in February and we have lots of activities in between. The school has participated in the 2nd Annual Island Lake Regional Science Fair in Garden Hill and there are also sporting events that we have joined in.

Spring break is just around the corner and everyone is pretty much excited to take a breather from the daily grind of our school life.

Time flies fast and without us knowing it, June will be here. I encourage parents to send their children to school especially the High School so they can catch up with their work and earn their credits. I also encourage students to attend school regularly and work hard.

I hope everyone will enjoy the spring break and be safe.

The second semester is well underway and students are doing another set of courses. I urge the parents to check what their sons/daughters are doing by looking at their report cards after each semester. Make sure to send them to school every day as attendance is important if they want to earn their credits. Be sure to drop in anytime.

Good luck students and work hard!

Hello from nursery class!!!

It was a short month. We are doing our rabbit unit, soon we will go on a field trip for rabbit snaring and students are very excited. Hope we can catch rabbits and we will have a rabbit feast when we get them. We have learned quite a few rabbit vocabulary words this month. So rabbits is our word this month. Our next unit is going to be a fish unit.

Happy Easter and enjoy the spring break.

From Grade 4A

The month of February is the time of the year about spreading love ... love of reading and Valentines Day. Teaching our students to become skilled readers as young as they are, is a key to ensure their success in school and personal life.

An Owl Reading Log corner was used as an instrument inside the Grade 4A classroom to encourage the love of reading among the students.

A simple gesture of love and appreciation inside the classroom as one family was visibly expressed by exchanging cards among the students/loving thoughts given to their teacher and potluck get-together with goodies to take home.

The different presentations of Green Action Centre with regards to Recycling instilled in the minds and hearts of Grade 4A students as a primary duty of showing respect to the environment.

Hello from Grade 5A

Sheryl Harper - Teacher

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are approaching March Break. I just want to thank you for sending your child to school. We only have a few months of school left and we will be very busy learning new things. Keep sending your child to school.

Hello from Grade 6A

grade6A

Grade 6 students are having fun while observing how to use net in ice fishing.

Hello from Grade 6!

We have had a wonderful and exciting start to 2018. We will be completing our learning about the Static and Current Electricity and will soon decide on the next topic to investigate. Confederation and early Canadian history will continue to be our focus in Social Studies leading us onto the topics of suffrage and rights of women and both World Wars. In Math, we are continuing to build on our understanding of multiplication, factors, multiples and division using arrays. Please help your child master their multiplication facts by making sure they are practicing everyday. Also, February is I Love to Read Month and my students read books with their buddies from Grade 5. Children become better writers and more literate the more they read so please impress upon your child that reading is one of the key to success.

Greetings from Grade 8A

Kim Harper - Teacher

March break approaches real quick! Grade 8A class had a wonderful and exciting class field trip to Winnipeg. They were well behaved, and did not break any rules, couple of students got (carsick) bus sick at first, but was okay coming back. Please parents call the school or our classroom if they are sick, and send your child to school daily.

Have a safe March Break!

Hello from the Science Room

Keith Ranville - High School Science Teacher

Hello everyone!

Spring is almost here and I hope everyone is okay. The science fair has come and gone, both in Wasagamack and Garden Hill. Many good projects. I am proud of everyone because everyone did a great job and did more than I could hope for. Once the snow melts we will get our baseball club going again. We had an excellent chess tournament with St. Theresa Point and Garden Hill. We finished in first place. Congrats to Butch for winning your big chess match. Thank you for taking time to read this part.

Hello from the Social Studies Department

Randy Harper - High School Social Studies Teacher

Hello from Social Studies class!

First of all, I like to encourage all high school students to never give up on their education: And to the parents to keep encouraging their children to keep it up with their education. In the second semester, the grade 9s is studying contemporary Canada and aboriginal studies. The grade 10s is studying geographic issues of the 21st century. The students are doing well. However students must maintain daily attendance to be successful in their studies.

I wish you all well. Have a great spring break.

From English, Language Arts

Sylvia Harper - Teacher

Hello from the ELA portable!

Wow! This month has been busy, busy, busy so far! With all the activities and class trips that are going on, sometimes we just need to stop and read a book, so that is what we have been doing sometimes. Reading not only takes you to another world, it is relaxing as well and sometimes I think our students need that.

So we have started semester 2 at the beginning of February. Parents please remind your children that they are here to learn. Sometimes I think they need to be reminded of that, not just at school, but at home as well.

Right now the grade nines are working on the basics of writing an essay. The grade 10 class have just begun their short story unit, and the grade 12 class are doing a combination of provincial exam prep and discovering different forms of writing. Please remind your grade 12 students that they are responsible for doing their own independent novel study on their own times. That is all the news we have for now! Long days and pleasant nights to you all!

Important upcoming dates: ELA Provincial Exams May 28 to 31, 2018

From Physical Education Dept - High School

Donna Wood - Phys Ed Teacher

We are trying to keep up with our exercises. Students are keen on orienteering. The students are well fit. They are participating in OLI, exercise classes, tryouts and participated in Red Sucker Lake Volleyball. Thank you Red Sucker for inviting us to play. We had fun at the school as well as the ride over there. Outdoor Education will be awesome once the ice melts away. We can start canoeing and go fishing as well. You are welcome to come and join us for our outdoor education class, if you have any ideas pass them along to me. We will be working on fish unit too. Have a safe spring break and all your children are awesome!

Hello, from the Vice Principal

Spring break is approaching and the teachers are counting the days when they go for a getaway. So, I hope everyone is safe wherever they go. The students have been good, they went for a field trips and some went to Red Sucker to play sports.

It has been going so fast pretty soon June will be here. Parents send your children to school so they can catch up on their work. It is crucial that high school students to attend their classes so they can get their high school credits. They know no credit will be given to them unless they hand in their work. Keep reminding them that is school is important.

The little ones are always excited to be in school, they listen to their teachers and they do their work. They make nice things in their classroom. They are learning new things and some times we have elders that come to the school to show some cultural values to our young people. Right now, we have moose fry with the little ones, and grade 6 have gone net fishing.

I know its hard to send your children to school, they do not want to get up and get very lazy but once they come they are happy.

We have visitors that come to teach the teachers that need to be in place in the school. We have new curriculums that change and we need to be at par with it.

So, everyone enjoy your spring break, and God bless you.

Leslie Harper
Vice Principal

From the Resource Department

April Harper - High School Resource

Greetings to everyone!

My name is April Harper, High School Resource Teacher. My message today will be to keep sending your child/children to school. Education is important. We cannot stress that enough. Remind your child why we send them to school. Each milestone they reach is important. We, as parents have to let our child grow and to guide them as they mature. That is my message. In other news, winter has come to an end although we still see the snow out there. The snow will eventually melt and it will start to get warm.

During the beginning of February, I was instructed to set up a field trip for our students. 15 students were selected to go on a field trip. There were activities set up for the students. I am sure the students had fun. Sometimes, our children need to experience what urban life is all about and to experience what it is like out there. Sometimes, we need to expose our children on how urban life is. Especially the pro and cons about urban life. Eventually our child will go out into the world and to get their education and to become someone. It is our job to guide them as they test out their wings. This is one of the reasons why we set up a field trip for our students. To get that exposure and to experience some of what urban life has to offer. Please, keep sending your children to school.

Thank you.

Greetings from Grade 1B

Cindy Knott - Teacher

Hello Parents and Guardians,

The students in grade 1B are progressing well and getting used to the daily routine. I am proud of these enthusiastic learners and their accomplishments. Also, help your child to speak the Island Lake dialect. This language is taught in class. They need to know this and their identity. Let us work together for our children to have success in life.

Have a safe holiday and Happy Easter. Stay safe and God bless!

From Grade 2B

Anne McDougall - Teacher

Hello,

Grade 2B are busy trying to catch up with their work. They are learning how to add and subtract. Next they will be learning about money. Although they know how to spend it, they need to know about nickels, dimes and quarters. They also like to colour.

Please parents read to them, that is how they will learn to read.

Take good care of your kids and dress them properly. Thank you for sending them to school.

From Grade 2C

Maggie McDougall - Teacher

Greetings from Grade 2C!

We are presently learning to be responsible for our learning. We know we have to respectful of our surroundings as well as the feelings and property of others. In our studies, we learned to write our own sentences. We know about Place Value.

The students know that the snow is starting to melt and to be careful when playing outside because it is slippery and still not warm enough to wear sweaters. They have matured since we started school in their attitudes and their behavior.

We wish you a very Happy Easter and please be safe.

Greetings from Grade 4B

Lydia Wood - Teacher

We have been busy and have worked hard within the last couple of months. They are eager to learn new concepts and have covered many tasks. Students are looking forward for their Spring Break and already have plan on what they want to do. Stay safe.

Please notify the school if your child is sick or unable to come to school!

Hello from Grade 7B

Cecilia Harper - Teacher

A big hello from Grade 7B!

Although we started late in our school year, students in grade 7B had no problem in picking up the regular classroom routines. They enjoy learning new stuff that are presented in each subject areas. Grade 7B students are a very great bunch to teach and also like doing hands on activities especially in the Traditional units.

We are looking forward to getting our much needed springs break and I hope everyone has a safe spring break!

Hello from Grade 8B

Lorna Wood - Teacher

We are so happy that spring break is just around the corner. It has been a really busy term. We had to try and catch up all the work we are supposed to be doing to meet deadlines. We also went on a class field trip to Winnipeg. It was a lot of fun and educational. We went to the human rights museum. It was interesting. We took care of each other and had a lot of food. It was a good trip. We thank the teachers, chaperones, admin and the director in making this trip happen. It will be one of our fondest memories in GKS. We even got stuck on the road but luckily, with our teamwork we got ourselves free. Talk about team work!

Anyways, have yourselves a safe and happy spring break. May God bless you.

Industrial Arts

William Deaffie - Teacher

Half of the year is upon us and I have been busy with projects for the students. I have tried to instill pride in the works that these students do in making these projects. My belief is what we do with our works is a reflection of who we are and if we take pride in what we do then it shows who we are. Most of the students that come to my class are into completing what was assigned. I am hoping that maybe 1 or 2 may get interested in this field of works. It has been very rewarding for me in the projects we make are centres on what we can use at home. I keep telling the kids to stay in school a keep busy. Been a good year so far. Let us make it better.

From Home Economics

Ella Knott - Home Ec Teacher

Hello to everyone!

Well, well it is almost this time of the year again (spring break) I hope it all is well with everyone and have a good and enjoyable time and I hope you get a lot of traditional foods, which is very plentiful out there in the wild. Get a lot of fish, ducks and geese if they flew in already from south. (Possibly moose too.)

The students in Home Economics have worked hard along their stitching and embroidery. You parents, please show your children to sew, especially the girls. Some had a hard time, just to thread, and tie their threads. By grade 10 they are ready for embroidery but small patterns. So they are progressing slowly and surely, and they should have completed their embroidered pillows.

Keep sending your children to school, so they can learn more in academic subjects and courses. Also teach your children to respect, themselves, friends, teachers, elders, and their parents. Remind them every day and please teach them to pray, even if they will just say, Thank you Lord, every day. They will learn even if they start very young, and that way, you as a parent are helping your small and teens to say this every day.

Thank you and may God Bless you and keep you safe every day.

Computer Lab

Computer Teacher
Grade 11B Homeroom Teacher

We have just transitioned to the 2nd term of our school year 2017-2018 starting February 12, 2018. Looking at the big picture, we have a lot of activities and events on our plates beginning with our participation in the 2nd Island Lake Regional Science Fair in Garden Hill and hosting the 1st Island Lake Invitational Chess Tournament. Our school will also participate in the music festival and the science fair in Winnipeg come March.

We have installed three (3) new S6000 Smartboards in our school ... one at the Resource Room, another one at Social Studies and the last one at the fitness center. There are still two (2) remaining S6000 Smartboards designated for ELA and Grade 7B portable which will be installed when the technicians from Schoolnet comes back last week of February or early March. They will also install a new network switch to restore internet connectivity at Grade 7A portable.

We are currently upgrading our computers at the computer lab and planning to install some PCs at the library for research purposes. We are also advised that our Google expedition technology kit is expected to arrive sometime in March so we have something new to look forward to. It is the exciting world of virtual reality! There are new technologies that were showcased at the recent science fair in Garden Hill by MFNERC like computer coding, drone aerial photography and robotics. Soon, we will introduce them to our school, too.

So parents and guardians, keep your children coming to the school. There are a lot of new things they can learn in their academics, life skills, science and computer technology.

Native Language

Solomon Harper - Teacher

Greetings from Native Language!

Well this year has been really fast, summer will get here in no time. Must I remind you, Students you need to start using your language more often, we need to keep our language and not lose it. Our language is one of the most important thing in our lives, it is who we are, so please let us not throw our language away and keep coming to school.

Thank you.

Stay SAFE, everyone and enjoy the Spring Break!!!
